Introduction

Welcome to Martin's Land's End to John O'Groats cycle ride. I planned to cycle the 970-mile route in 13 days, plus one 'rest' day (approximately 70 miles per day). In the end, we covered 1071 miles, and tookg the west coast route, via Arran, as described in Phil Horsley's excellent LEJOG book. You might also want to check out LEJOG routes that other people have done.

Thanks to the Market Rasen Mail for including us in last week's issue and also this week's issue!

Thanks to all those who sponsored me. The money was shared between Asthma UK and Rotary Market Rasen, who will spend their portion on polio eradication.

I'm also dragged along my parents, sister and Andrew Godwin, but they weren't up to cycling the whole way, so they took the car for large parts and provided invaluable backup, especially when my chain snapped. I used my Giant SCR3, purchased from Arrow Cycles of Lincoln

We tried to actively blog the trip as we went, with frequent short SMS updates and longer daily posts, which will hopefully have accompanying photos and plots from Andrew's maemo GPS device, from which this site should have done magic like map plotting and making side-on elevation profiles.

About this site

This site is my first use of the Django web framework, and the first thing of any significance that I've written using Python or CSS. I'd like to thank Andrew for all his help, and Nick Burch for his geo_helper.py. Update: To save resources, I have spidered the site now that it is unlikely to change in the future, and it is now being served as static content.

If you're eager to fix my bugs or just plain curious, you can use subversion to get the latest source code, released under the GNU Affero GPL v3. You can also contact me.
